What Our Clients Say
LoadWatcher.com allows our entire team the ability to locate any carrier from one dashboard.
Every year, there are a few thousand truck accidents. These accidents lead to costly insurance claims, fatalities, injuries, and extensive traffic jams as the wreckage is constantly cleared. People assume that the accidents take place due to the size of the trucks alone. However, statistics show that is not the case with trucks. What is really the case is that, as compared to the other vehicles, large trucks are responsible for a lesser number of accidents.
The American agencies that are involved in reporting the truck-driving stats and the accidents are the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Highway Administration, all of which come under the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration manages the highway traffic with an aim to reduce accidents. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates the commercial driver’s license requirements (intrastate) and the commercial driving safety (interstate). The Federal Highway Administration ensures trucks follow regulations like the weight of the vehicles with the aim of preserving highway infrastructures and improving the safety limits of trucks based on vehicle size.
It is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that primarily report on the safety issues of trucking. In addition, the Truck Safety Coalition (TSC) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) track fatality and injury, and truck accident numbers, while the Federal Highway Administration primarily reports on information like the tonnage of the freight.
The statistics
As a parent agency, the Department of Transportation reports that:
The common factor is that truck crashes are increasing and often involve a fatality, even though the statistics vary depending on who is issuing the report. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that:
Sixty-one percent of the fatalities took place on major roads other than highways. Most of the accidents that took place till date were due to cellular phone usage while driving.
